I love bringing my kids to the bookstore especially during the holidays. There is usually seasonal music playing in the background. The aromatic smell of coffee from the cafe permeates throughout the store. I love browsing through books and finding out what novelty items are offered. I came across recycled newspaper pencils from TreeSmart. These cool pencils are made from recycled newspaper. The pencils are easily sharpened like regular pencils. It's great to see how innovative eco-friendly companies are leveraging commonly recycled goods such as newspaper and turning them to functional and practical goods. I am trying to teach my kids to appreciate daily items, like pencils, that we often take for granted. When I was growing up, I remember using pencils down until they were little stubs (partially because I was obsessed with using only finely sharpened pencils). Fortunately, the price of pencils have been drastically reduced over the years (If you calculate the costs adjusted for inflation). I take a permanent marker and label each pencil with my name or my kids' initials so we learn to keep track of them. I've tried to reuse and recycle as much existing school supplies as possible. However, there are always a few items on the school supply list that needs to be purchased. When there is a need, it's always a relief to find an eco-friendly alternative to traditional ones. For example, I love the Pentel RSVP retractable ball point pens. It comes in eight different colors and best of all, it contains 59% recycled plastic. Pretty impressive! The ink rolls off the tip smoothly and makes me feel like a scholar (even if I am just writing a check). For more information about their product ,please visit www.pentel.com. ![]() With the warmer weather, I have gotten into a cleaning and rearranging mode. I've decided to organize my files (perhaps it was because we just successfully filed our tax returns recently). There are some many things to keep track of: utility bills, credit care bills, momentos, kids' school related paperwork, etc. To help keep me organized, I use the Rebinders (3 ring binders made from durable, corrugated cardboard). It's no nonsense and simple design is functional and eco-friendly. Consider using their office products and better yet, contact your office manager (supply manager) at work to have them stock up on these supplies (they offer wholesale discounts). For more information about their products, please visit www.rebinder.com. ![]() When I think of my elementary school days, I remember having a lot of fun playing with friends. But I think my best memories to date revolve around getting new school supplies in the beginning of the school year. I've continued my passion (obsessions?) with school/office supplies when I entered the corporate world and actually secretly enjoyed when my office was moved to another location every six months or so (it was a great opportunity for me to update my office arrangements and supplies). Sometimes school supplies have such sentimental value, I came across my husband's highschool binder filled with his baseball card collection (I will upload a photo of his graffiti binder once I get my refurnished digital camera back). It's amazing that somehow this binder survived four moves. I think I'll show it to our kids when they are a bit older. www.NakedBinder.com offers 100% recycled project binders in a range of colors/sizes. These binders are also 100% recyclable. Their binders are the most eco-friendly recyclable binders in the planet since it's made of 100% post consumer materials and is also 100% recyclable. The feel/texture is reminiscent of my husband's binder. Brings back great memories.
