![]() Like most parents, I tend to rush out of the house in the morning, trying to get my kids ready and on time for school, hoping to remember to pack their lunches while trying to remember to wear a bit of makeup so I will look presentable to the outside world. I've devised easy ways to make my mornings more efficient. For example, I have my kids' socks nicely tucked in their shoes at night, so in the morning, they have socks ready for them. No more running around the house in search of clean socks. As for the makeup, I've streamlined my cosmetic regime to include: eyeliner, concealer and lipstick/gloss. I recently tried the Sante America Lip Duo Contour and Gloss. At a retail price of $12, it is an affordable natural makeup. I love the color staying power and the ease of use of this product. As professional makeup artists would say, my lips look like there is depth to them now. I've gotten compliments from moms that usually don't even speak to me so I'm finally getting some acknowledgement. I have never heard of this brand before, but Sante America is a top selling European brand with a heritage that goes back to 1977. It's made it's way across the ocean and is now available! For more information about Sante America products, please visit www.santeamerica.com. Add Comment ![]() Now that the weather is warmer, I enjoy giving myself nice pedicures to go with my sandals. I've tried Karma Organic cranberry nail polish (it does not contain toluene and other harmful chemicals found in traditional nail polishes). The solution appears thicker than traditional nail polish, so be very conservative with the application. A little goes a long way!! It lasts longer than traditional nail polishes and their organic nail polish remover works wonderfully! At $9.99 per bottle, the nail polish is about twice the cost of the average drug store nail polish. It is comparably priced to luxury brand name nail polishes. At the end of the day, it is better for you and the environment. I have to confess that I have never finished a bottle of nail polish (somehow in traditional nail polishes, the pigments separate from the solution and appears so gross that I usually toss them out). Now that I am using Karma Organic's nail polish, there is no going back for me. I know that for the first time, I will finish using a bottle of nail polish. This usually leads to production of many wonderful edible products in the market. Then subsequent findings usually show that the same fruit or vegetable is actually good for use as a topical cream or skincare product (which makes sense, if it's good enough to eat, it should be good enough to put on our skin). It's a wonderful product development process. Well, I've been drinking pomegranate juice for a few years now (ever since studies have shown that pomegranate is about three times or more nutritional than other leading fruit juices). I recently discovered a new Pomegranate skincare line from www.Weleda.com. Their pomegranate products are 100% certified natural with no perservatives, fragrances or chemicals. I tried the Pomegranate Regenerating Hand Cream. It's a great moisturizing cream with studies showing that the cream prevents premature formation of age spots (which is great because I'm beginning to see some signs of age spots on my hands). In addition to being sold at Whole Foods Markets, their products are now available at all Target stores. For more information about their products, visit www.weleda.com. I actually borrowed a couple of books from the local library and researched the process (I even got to the point in which I bought a double boiler on sale ---- .... apparently a double boiler is necessary for making your own soap). Atlas, the double boiler is collecting dust (I might resurrect it for my cooking attempts). The reality is,.. I do not have the time or energy to attempt making my own soap, so I enjoy purchasing home made organic soaps from boutique shops. I have tried the Fresh Meadow soap from www.truly-life.com. The soap crumbles a little bit when you use it in the shower, so I savaged it by placing it in a plastic container (I actually squish the soap back together, sort of like how my kids play with Play-Dough). Despite the little bits of crumbs that I left behind, I really enjoyed the fresh clean scent of the soap. I also wind up using a lot less water since organic soaps do not create as much suds as traditional soaps. This boutique shop offers a number of different handmade eco-friendly soaps, lotion bars and perfumes. The items are all handmade and 100% organic. The soaps come in parchment paper like wrapping and brown paper wrapping. They are a Virginia based company that delivers their products to local clients via bicycle. (Talk about practicing what they preach). For more information about their handmade organic products, please visit www.truly-life.com. Hurry and visit their website, they are offering FREE samples of their product as long as you sign up for it before February 14th (a great free treat for yourself). As I continue on my eco-friendly journey, I am learning more each day about how so many wonderful individuals are all trying their best to keep their businesses profitable while "doing the right thing" for the environment. I get so excited just learning about these individuals. The eco-friendly community is growing and I'm glad to be a part of it. ![]() I love trying new organic, eco-friendly products. Seems like each new product is formulated to be simply better than previous ones. This is simply the law of free markets (yes, I am still reaping the benefits of having double majors in Biology and Economics from college over a decade ago). Sometimes we forget the trailblazers and pioneers that were bold and visionary enough to create such markets. I'm writing to remind you that their products are great and there is a reason why they have such "cult-like" followers. I recently tried Pharmacopia's Lavender Body lotion. The lavender scent is soothing and the lotion dries quickly (leaving just smooth silky skin). The company was established in 1999. My only wish is that I discovered their products sooner. Pharmacopia is one of the first organic bodycare companies. Pharmacopia is sold in top spas and boutiques internationally. Their products are developed according to ancient healing wisdom, promoting balance and comfort while delighting the senses. Pharmacopia’s products use potent anti-oxidants and therapeutic plant extracts with no parabens, petro-chemicals, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, or colors. For more information on their products, please visit www.pharmacopia.net. Random giveaways are sent by the end of each month. . I tried the Intensive Body Cream from Actual Organics. The cream does not contain any traditional preservatives such as parabens. It has an expiration date right on the package (which I love, I've mentioned in my earlier article on organic makeup the need to really keep track of the shelf life of organic makeup/cosmetics because without the potential harmful preservatives, organic makeup/cosmetics do not last as long as department store traditional makeup). I couldn't resist the scent of the lotion that contains a hint of sandalwood and geranium. You can find out more about their products at www.actualorganics.com. In the month of January, a random email reader will receive a sample of their products. It is a concentrated blend of oils and botanicals to soothe and pamper inflamed skin, while balancing and hydrating. Two to three drops used at night are all you need to wake up with fresh, soft smooth skin. Faraya, a line of natural, holistic skin care products for women of all ages and skin types. Using only plant-based ingredients, with no synthetic additives or preservatives, Faraya offers a simple, yet effective, skin care regimen. The serum made my skin feel really oily so I must have used too much the first time. When I tried it again, I followed the instructions and used only two drops and it felt really luxurious. I felt like I was giving myself a mini-spa treatment at night. Have you tried any new organic products recently? If so, please share your experience. Organic makeup is definitely on my Christmas list. I hope I was good enough this year... ![]() I have recently tried Alamo Organic Peppermint Magic Shower Gel. It took some time getting used to the small amount of suds from the shower gel compared to traditional shower gels. However, the nice peppermint smell and clean skin afterwards reminds me that it works well. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates cosmetic labeling under the authority of both the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act) and the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act (FPLA). These laws and their related regulations are intended to protect consumers from health hazards and deceptive practices and to help consumers make informed decisions regarding product purchase. Pharmaceutical prescription products require FDA approval prior to distribution and sale. However, the FDA does not pre-approve cosmetic product labeling. It is the manufacturer's and/or distributor's responsibility to ensure that products are labeled properly. Therefore, it’s important to protect yourself from purchasing potentially dangerous cosmetics. The following are top seven tips on how to choose organic cosmetics.Make sure the cosmetics has not been fined or penalized by the FDA The FDA does report violations and cosmetic product recalls on their website at www.fda.gov. So, before you venture out into buying a new cosmetic line, visit the FDA website to make sure there has not been any reported violations. Review the ingredients The FDA requires that the manufacturer includes the ingredients of the product in order of dominance. In other words, if the product is 90% water, then, water appears as the first ingredient on the product label. This gives you a clue in terms of what the product is most made of. Find out where the product is manufactured Since cosmetics do not require pre-approval from the FDA, it is very risky to buy cosmetics that are relatively new. Therefore, it’s important to find out the manufacturing process of the product. Was the product produced in someone’s kitchen or was it manufactured in a manufacturing plant? Non-US manufactured cosmetics may contain more/less active ingredients compared to US manufactured cosmetics. Read the WARNING and CAUTION sections of the product label Most cosmetics are relatively harmless, but some have active ingredients that may be harmful to pregnant women or others as well. For example, there are certain side effects associated with using Retinol A. Some of these side effects include peeling, redness, skin warmth, skin irritation, increased sensitivity to sunlight, stinging at the site of application, nausea, dry skin and muscle pain. Find out if the cosmetic has been ECOCERT? ECOCERT® is the only organic certification for color cosmetics. The following are the standards for ECOCERT cosmetics: No pre-treatment used in any of the raw materials found in organic formulas. All suppliers must pass an extensive review before their raw materials are approved. All manufacturing and packaging facilities undergo a rigorous inspection. All packaging must be recyclable. Ask for recommendations from your dermatologists Major cosmetic companies can afford to get their manufacturing process and products certified under ECOCERT. However, there are a number of legitimate products that have not been certified because of the high costs associated to certification. Therefore, it’s important to ask your dermatologists what he/she recommends as well. Buy only the amount you will use It’s important to note that organic makeup products actually spoil quicker than traditional makeup because there are no artificial preservatives in organic makeup. Therefore, do not be tempted by a sale or major discount unless you know that you will use the organic cosmetics within the recommended timeframe. For eyeliners and eye related makeup, discard after six months of initial use. For lipsticks and lip related products, discard within six months of initial use. For foundations or skincare related products, discard within one year of initial use. Get in the habit of labeling the bottom of your makeup containers, lipsticks, compact foundations and all cosmetic products with the date of initial use. Otherwise, you will forget when you first started using the product. HoneyBee Gardens natural makeup 11/23/2009
![]() I have always tried to experiment using new makeup products. I'm especially excited with the number of organic makeup products available. I have recently tried products from HoneyBee Gardens. First, I was very impressed with the eco-conscious packaging (they used shredded paper as packaging material). The Luminous pressed mineral powder comes in a chic soft plastic container (not your average indulgent non-eco-friendly department store packaging). What is organic makeup? Cosmetics is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration but it does not have the same stringent organic USDA Organic seal and standards like food. This makes sense since products you place on your skin is less likely to be absorbed than products you ingest. If you are interested in learning more about organic makeup and skin products in general, read my upcoming article on organic/natural makeup regulations that will be published next week.
