Gone are the college days where I washed all of my clothes in coined machines, not caring whether the whites and colors should be separated (I was just glad that the clothes were cleaned). Now I take great pride in ensuring that my clothes last longer. I've been using laundry bags for my delicates and also for most of my cotton wear. These laundry bags come in various sizes. All you have to do, is place your clothes in the bag, zip it up and throw them in the washer. Your clothes lasts longer and the colors do not fade away as much. Having your clothes last longer helps keep them from the landfills. Also, I never throw out clothes. My mantra is donate whenever possible. If not, clothes can always be used as rags for cleaning.
With a shoe laundry bag, you can have your sneakers washed in the washing machine and they come out clean! For jeans, have them turned inside out before you throw them in the washer so that the color lasts longer, too. As for the detergent amount, use less than what is recommended (unless your clothes are really soiled). Hang dry your clothes and avoid using the dryer. It takes about 15 minutes or less to hang clothes (for those who are really bored, listening to music makes the task go by faster). I am getting ready to sign up for my next 5k race and have found out that there are a number of races that are committed to being eco-friendly. Before you sign up for your next race, contact the race administrator and encourage the race administrator to adhere to these guidelines. The "race without trace" mantra is as follow:

![]() Despite the thunderstorm and tornado warning, we attended the Downtown Raleigh Planet Earth Day Celebration today. It was a great event with a good turnout (given the weather). In addition to several not for profit organizations highlighting various conservation efforts, there were art displays (refer to the photo of plastic bottles here), educational trivia games for children and eco-friendly clothing vendors. There was an impressive cardboard castle made from recycled Burt Bees' storage boxes. Overall, it was a successful event in raising awareness of great eco-friendly efforts. I thought I already knew a lot regarding eco-friendly initiatives but it was a very educational experience for me. For example, I learned that there are now oyster shell recycling efforts that promotes collection of oyster shells and having them returned to the ocean to serve as shelters for budding oceanic creatures. There are also local initiatives that for a small service fee provide a compost bin for you to set aside your food leftover and will pick up your bin weekly and drop off a compose bag filled with fresh compose so you don't have to compose your own food. There was also a live band as well as craft activities for kids. If you would like to learn more about this event, please visit www.planetearthcelebration.com. This annual event started in 2008. Hope your future participation will keep this annual event a continued success. 1) How much effort or "mining" did it take to retrieve or process the material? If it takes a substantial amount of effort to harvast or "mine" the material, then, the material is not eco-friendly. 2) Is the item an antique? If so, it can be considered eco-friendly because you are in essense reusing the item. 3) Are the materials naturally occuring in nature (not extensively processed) or is it made from recycled synthetic materials? If the materials are naturally occuring and sourced in an environmentally sustainable way, then, it may be considered eco-friendly. Besides the above criteria, one may also consider how the profits are used from the purchase, some individuals make purchases from companies that contribute a percent of their profits to charitable and/or eco-friendly causes. I completed my first 5K for the year this morning. It was about fifty degrees but no complaints. I had a great time running.

However, the heat tends to make my face breakout in blemishes so I need to be vigilant in keeping up with my skincare routine. I have recently tried the citrus masque from Eve Organics Beauty. This simple clear facial masque is made of natural ingredients and contains vitamins C & E. Best of all, it is gentle enough so that you can use it twice a week. I was not used to the light texture at first because I have used clay based masques in the past. Surprisingly, the masque is effective in renewing my skin and reducing blemishes. This product is not recommended for oily skin, Eve Organics offer diffskincare products that are specific for oily skin. It is reasonably priced and can be purchased online at www.eveorganics.net.
