It was pouring rain. I was feeling sick. That didn't stop me from running in the NC State University Torch Run 5K benefiting the Special Olympics today. The race was held at the NC State University campus. A number of participants left with their long sleeve race shirt without running the race. However, a large crowd remained. The race started promptly at noon with a downhill course for about 1/3rd of a mile and then a series of hills until the last half mile (which was a flat straight stretch). I didn't have any hood or hat on, so my hair and face were dripping wet from the rain. It felt good running in the cold rain and was in a way a meditative experience. The race benefited a great cause, the Special Olympics. I matched my personal best time (9:47 min/mile), given the rain and hilly course, I am feeling pretty good about the results. More importantly, I feel like I can now consider myself a runner because despite the rainy day, I completed the race.
