AMS’ National Organic Program (NOP) develops, implements, and administers national production, handling, and labeling standards for organic agricultural products. The NOP also accredits the certifying agents (foreign and domestic) who inspect organic production and handling operations to certify that they meet USDA standards. The infamous US Organic Certified Seal was developed by AMS' NOP.
Like any product, manufacturing mishaps, lack of legitimate record keeping, unsound or inconsistent practices and inappropriate use of the USDA Organic Certified label will receive a citation or warning from this department.
Unfortunately, due to the limited resources of this department, there may be a lag in tracking poor product productions/manufacturing practices. However, do not keep yourself up at night worrying about these aberrations. They are the exceptions, not the norm.
In general, for more personal food/health protection and just to add some spice in your life, you should purchase your food from a variety of sources (e.g. eating the same type of cereal produced from the same company every day may not be the best breakfast choice).
Although I have my personal food favorites, I try to eat my food from a variety of sources (it helps that different foods go on sale at different times of the year, too).
